Within the intimate setting of a shop that sells all things Persian, Steve Stack a.k.a. Scott Pack, publisher of The Friday Project, an experimental imprint of Harper Collins, introduced his new book 21st Century Dodos. The unique setting complimented a book which looks at things that are now extinct or on the verge of extinction from our lives. Anything from the Sony Walkman and Green Shield Stamps, to the absence of once popular retailers, are all explored with individual Dodo ratings. As Steve turned the pages he successfully threw in an innovative mix of witty storytelling and interesting facts to engage the audience. At this point it must be said that there was quite an unforgettable moment as he spoke about a Scottish log cabin but I won’t spoil it by telling.
This quirky book would reinvigorate even the most hebetudinous individual and doesn’t stick to any one particular category. Instead, it takes in all things that we once cherished, setting up a poignant trip down our own personal memory lane. It allows us to reminisce on things that used to be dear to us and in a way, taken for granted. With over a 100 different examples of things gone by the wayside or sailing away from our grasp, it’s amazing what we as human beings unwittingly retain in our memories. So if you’re searching for a book that’s a little bit different then 21st Century Dodos definitely fits the bill. You might even think twice before you decide to throw something out, I know I will.
